The Process, Paul Searle
Written by sunfeet22 | September 28, 2012

If you’re involved in any part of Portland’s creative community, chances are you’ve seen the fantastic cinematic skills of Paul Searle. He’s filmed events including Portland Creative Mornings, the recent XOXO festival, and our own WeMake workshops and sketchXchanges. For many of the smaller community projects, Paul often donates his time to film and edit footage so everyone can enjoy the events.
Paul has helped Portland’s design community grow by documenting and sharing our collective experiences, talent and inspiration with the rest of the world. Now is our chance to give back by supporting Paul’s new Kickstarter project, The Process.
The Process is a new documentary series exploring the creative processes of the best graphic designers, illustrators and letterers in the world. The first four episodes will feature Ian Collins, Mike Monteiro, Kate Bingaman-Burt and Mary Kate McDevitt as they create a custom piece of work and explore their design process.
Earlier this month Paul spoke with WeMake’s Yvonne Perez Emerson about his experience as a filmmaker and what is in store for the future.
How long have you been doing video production?
I started making movies in middle-school with my friends. I remember editing from one VHS player to another in my first video class in 8th grade. Ever since then I’ve been learning how to improve. I have a degree in Film & Video, but feel like I’ve really started to find my style ever since moving to Portland and working with the design community here.
What are you working on right now?
Now that I just quit my job, my focus is on Maxine Denver and growing that with my wife. She does great 35mm photography and I handle the video side of things. We’re gearing up for a few big events coming up; we’re covering the XOXO Festival, Feast Portland and Design Week Portland.
What are your favorite videos to create?
My favorites are simple documentaries about interesting people, lately that’s been designers. I actually just launched a project called The Process (theprocess.es) that is a web series of short docs focusing on graphic designers, illustrators and letterers with a shop component twist for good measure.
Is there anything about the process of your work you might want to share with us?
I don’t know if there is anything unique about my process. I like to control all aspects of the production, do everything myself, which keeps the projects smaller.
Be sure to keep an eye out for Paul and Kelly who will be filming and photographing during Design Week Portland, and if you haven’t backed The Process on Kickstarter yet, get over there and help get this exciting project funded.
